Skansen is the world’s oldest open-air museum located on the island of Djurgården. Once you arrive, be prepared to be immersed in all things Sweden from its history and culture, to its cuisine.
Go back in time to 1720s Sweden and visit the houses, workshops, and shops from the past right up to the modern-day. Interpreters dressed in authentic clothing will talk to you and tell you about Swedish life and customs for an immersive experience that everyone will love.
There is so much for children to enjoy at the museum. They can play with old-fashioned toys, go on funfair rides, swings, carousels, and even a classic car track! Not to mention the wildlife on offer. You’ll be able to see a variety of Nordic wildlife such as the brown bear, red fox, reindeer and more! The Children’s Zoo features other domestic animals for young ones to get up and close with. The two indoor aquariums will take you on a journey to discover all the sea life in the area and beyond.
Restaurants and cafés are dotted around the complex so you don’t need to worry about going hungry. Take a rest and try some of the local Swedish dishes or if you fancy something sweet, be sure to try some freshly baked waffles.
The museum hosts celebrations and festive activities throughout the year, and if you are visiting at Christmas you’ll get to discover the Christmas markets and other Christmas traditions (that might include dancing and singing!).
After a visit to Skansen, you’ll become a true expert on all things Sweden!
