Antwerp has its fair share of hidden gems, but Vlaeykensgang is something special. Nestled between two busy streets in the heart of Antwerp, the enchanting alleyway twists and turns pasts picturesque buildings, boutiques and cafes. Dating back to the 16th-century, Vlaeykensgang is one of Antwerp’s only remaining medieval streets. The city’s poorest people used to live here, along with cobblers in charge of ringing the nearby cathedral’s emergency bell. Vlaeykensgang was on the brink of demolition during the 1960s, but antique dealer Axel Vervoordt came to the rescue by purchasing and restoring it. Thanks to him, the peaceful and much-loved backstreet still exists today.

As soon as you step foot on its cobbles, you’ll be transported to the past. Take some time to marvel at ancient architecture like the Guild House of the barrel makers, a historic building turned museum, showcasing the district’s history.

The secret alley is also home to some of Antwerp’s most charming restaurants, serving up traditional Flemish dishes in a cosy atmosphere.
