Kurzporträt Paderborn

Located in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, Paderborn gets its name from the River Pader that runs through it, and welcomes visitors with historical buildings, Waser-Renaissance architecture, as well as lots of green spaces. Its city center is where you’ll find museums, theatres, big squares and a relaxed local buzz. The selection of restaurants and cosy cafes will satisfy every tastebud and with a range of shops and boutiques, you’ll definitely find the perfect souvenir to take home. Paderborn is also home to the Liborifest at the end of July, one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany. Watch the city come to life with live music, fireworks, and a beer fountain in the town hall square!

Top three things to do in Paderborn

1. Explore over twenty historical buildings in the city center

It’ll be hard to miss the 93-meter tower of the cathedral that takes center stage in the city center. Admire its Gothic and Romanqesue features and step inside to see mosaics, stained-glass windows and crypts where the relics of St Liborius (city patron) are kept. A weekly market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays in front of the cathedral - see what local delights you can find! Other things to look out for in the city center are the charming, half-timbered Adam-and-Eve house and the Paderborn Town Hall - here you’ll get some picture-postcard shots!

2. Feel like royalty visiting the beautiful moated Neuhaus Castle

The castle (also known as Schloss Neuhaus) is the former residence of the Prince Bishops of Paderborn and is a great example of the Weser-Renaissance architecture. In its 42 hectares, visitors can relax in the Baroque gardens, enjoy many open-air and cultural events, or visit inside to see exhibitions and impressive rooms.

3. Enjoy outdoor activities on the Lippesee lake

In Paderborn’s district Sande, you can find this fun paradise of sports or relaxation. It offers aquatic activities where you can go sailing, surfing, waterskiing and more. Or, if you prefer to stick to the ground, there are footpaths to explore and restaurants to try. Children will love the playground and miniature golf!
