Kurzporträt Oviedo

Oviedo, the capital city of the northwestern region Asturias in Spain, is a treasure trove of architectural, historical and cultural delights.

Stroll through Oviedo’s historic center with its narrow streets and welcoming little squares to discover the charming atmosphere of the city. At the heart of the old town, you can find Oviedo’s Gothic cathedral, an impressive building and major stop for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Dotted around the city are a collection of 9th-century pre-Romanesque stone churches that have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They can be found in the old town or nestles in the surrounding foothills such as Santa María del Naranco, Iglesia de San Julián de los Prados. There is even a medieval fountain that still works to this day.

Get lost wandering around the city and see the Archaeological Museum and Museum of Fine Arts which boasts one of the best permanent collections in Spain with paintings by Picasso, Dali, El Greco and Goya. If you get thirsty along the way, be sure to stop for a cider and enjoy the show as cider is poured from high above you!

If you’re looking for some green spots, the public park Campo de San Francisco is well worth a visit. Here you can also meet the park’s resident cartoon character - a statue of Mafalda, the six-year-old philosopher from a famous Argentine comic strip.

Soak up the culture of the city by experiencing the El Fontán Market, or at the vibrant San Mateo Fiestas in September. See the city come to life with people dressed in typical Asturian costumes, free concerts, firework displays and more!
