Kurzporträt Nicosia

Nicosia is a fascinating place to visit if you’re looking to step off the beaches of Cyprus and head to a city! The city is split into north and south, bordered by the Green Line which can be walked along, where Greek Cypriots live in the south and Turkish in the north - you’ll have to bring euros and Turkish Lira if you plan on visiting both areas! As the last divided capital city in Europe, it’s a treasure trove of history, architecture, culture and faith. From Gothic and Venetian architecture to Islamic and Christian relics, there’s a real mix of things to do and see in Nicosia and you won’t be bored!

Top three things to do in Nicosia

1. Have fun walking around the old city

What’s striking about the old city is the Venetian wall that surrounds it in the shape of a star. Historic gates in the walls give access to the city which is a labyrinth of churches, museums, galleries and cobbled streets bustling with Cypriot life. The main gate is called Famagusta and don’t miss out on the popular Ledra Street where you can enjoy restaurants, shops, bars and cafes.

2. Curb those cravings and try a traditional Cypriot coffee and local delicacies

As you wander around the city, you’ll notice that there are coffee shops everywhere. Go inside to find the perfect Cypriot coffee for you, the bar staff will help! Why not order a pastry on the side too? For dinner, stop at a local tavern and try Cypriot meze, souvlaki, halloumi cheese, olives and so much more.

3. Enter as many museums as you can to learn all about the city!

Learn about the turbulent history of Cyrpus and its capital at various museums such as the Levantis Museum and The Cyprus Museum, the oldest and largest archaeological museum on the island. Art lovers will love the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMac) which hosts exhibitions from local and foreign artists.
