Kurzporträt Eisleben

Eisleben is located in central-eastern Germany and is known for being the hometown and the place of death of Martin Luther. For this reason, the city is also called “Lutherstadt Eisleben”.

Eisleben had an important role during the Protestant Reformation in 16th-century because part of the city jumped on Luther’s side against the Catholic Count Hoyer VI of Mansfeld-Vorderort. After the Napoleonic Wars, the city became first part of the Kingdom of Prussia and then of the Free State of Prussia. After World War II, Eisleben belonged to part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) until Germany’s reunification in 1990.

The German town offers many attractions connected to Martin Luther as his birth house and his death house, both designated a World Heritage Site. The city is also famous for the 13th-century convent of Helfta that was famous for its powerful and mystical abbesses.
